Students will be trained for entry-level jobs in cardiac electrophysiology as an EKG technician. Students learn how to

  • Operate equipment that records graphic tracing of the electrical impulses of the heart
  • Interpret graph data
  • Maintain EKG equipment
  • Prepare and monitor patients during procedure
  • Schedule appointments
  • Maintenance of patient records
Graduates of this program learn the skills necessary to work in the capacity of entry-level EKG technicians in hospitals, clinics, or private physicians' offices. A certificate of completion will be awarded to the student upon successful completion of this program.

This program is presented in the form of lectures, videotape, and slide presentations, and the use of analytical equipment. The core of the program is enhanced with the sciences of cardiac anatomy and physiology as well as medical law and ethics. Day students attend classes for twenty (20) hours per week for 8.3 weeks. Evening students attend classes for seventeen and half-hours (17.5) hours per week for 9.486 weeks. Mandatory externship of twenty (20) hours a week for 4.8 weeks must be completed prior to graduation. Students return to the campus eight (8) hours each week during externship for follow-up discussions, labs questions and answers support of information acquired at clinical sites.

Certification/Licensure
EKG technicians are not required to have licensure in the state of Texas. Graduates of this program may seek voluntary national certification that is available through Cardiovascular Credientialing International. Cardiovascular Credientialing International is the recognized organization for setting the exam. Certification may be a condition for employment.
