Program Description

Echocardiogram Technicians, also known as Cardiac Sonographers, use diagnostic ultrasound equipment to examine the heart chambers, valves, and vessels. This profession requires application of good judgment and the ability to provide competent medical services to patients. The images created are called Cardiac Sonograms or Echocardiograms, which may be performed while the patient is either resting or after post-exercise. The data obtained is used to assist the physician with diagnostic decisions.

Echocardiogram Technicians also may assist physicians in performing Transesophageal Echocardiography and Stress Echocardiography, which involves placing a small transducer in the patient's esophagus to obtain ultrasound images, or working on a treadmill or through the use of medication which increases heart rate.

At the completion of the program, graduates are equipped with the necessary skills for entry-level career opportunities in the medical field as a Cardiac Sonographer, also known as an Echocardiogram Technician, Administrator, Cardiac Researcher, or in commercial companies as Application Specialists, Sales Representatives, and Technical Advisors. Graduates are eligible to sit for the registry examination.

Graduates work as entry-level Cardiac Sonographers in hospitals, clinics, doctors' offices, or imaging centers. This program is offered in Spring, Summer, and Fall each year. Classes are small.
